By type of work

Which of these roofers does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, materials, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah roofing contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 25, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers roofing, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Eleven additional companies that came up in research were not listed. Five have websites that do not state both halves of the claim: one displays a Utah license number but never says it is insured, and four do not state either directly. Six had websites that could not be read on the review date because the page was gone, blocked automated reading, or returned an error. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

  • September 25, 2026. First published with 19 companies. All listings are self-reported. 5 of them display a contractor license number on their own websites.
Before you sign

How do you check a roofer's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For what the roofing classification covers and which insurance documents DOPL asks for, see the S280 roofing contractor license guide. For what the policies themselves cover, see roofing business insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the salesperson's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover roofing, such as S280 roofing contractor. A city business license or a shingle manufacturer's certification is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. For national brands, that is usually the local operating entity, not the brand.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to carry general liability, so the certificate should show it. The current DOPL contractor application asks for $1,000,000 per incident. The policy period should cover the days the crew is on the roof, and the limit should be listed, not blank.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

Roofing is fall-exposed work, so this matters more than for most trades. A roofer with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For roofing companies

What does a Salt Lake City roofing company need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City roofing company holds a Utah DOPL contractor license, usually the S280 Roofing Contractor classification, issued to the business entity. The DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder, plus workers compensation evidence for a company with employees or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver for an owner-only business. Most Salt Lake City roofers also carry commercial auto for their trucks and trailers.

  1. 1

Hold S280 in the business’s name.

S280 Roofing Contractor is the specialty classification Utah’s current contractor application lists for roofing work. The license is issued to the business entity, with a qualifier attached, not to the crew or a salesperson. DOPL currently asks specialty applicants for a 25-hour pre-licensure course and does not list a separate S280 trade exam or roofing certification; confirm the current form before applying.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at DOPL’s current limits.

The DOPL contractor application requires active general liability covering the licensed scope, with DOPL named as certificate holder and the named insured matching the licensed entity. Two current DOPL sources publish different aggregates, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding or submitting the certificate.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A roofing company with employees carries workers compensation; Utah requires it of employers with limited exceptions. An owner-only roofer may instead hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Labor Commission, which runs one year and becomes invalid once anyone is hired. DOPL asks for the certificate or waiver at application and renewal, and its current application says to notify DOPL before a first hire starts work.

  4. 4

Describe the roof work before relying on the policy.

A roofing policy is underwritten from the disclosed operations: low-slope or steep-slope work, maximum height and stories, and whether the crew uses torch-applied, open-flame, hot-asphalt, or other hot work. Fall exposure shapes the workers compensation side, and coverage does not satisfy OSHA fall-protection duties. A change into solar, gutters, or structural decking should be reported before the next job, and auditors commonly review subcontractor payments and class codes.

  5. 5

Expect certificate requests from GCs and property managers.

Salt Lake City general contractors, developers, and property managers usually ask a roofing sub for a certificate of insurance before the crew goes up, naming themselves as additional insured, setting minimum limits, and expecting workers compensation or a verified waiver on it. Additional insured status comes from an endorsement, not the certificate-holder box. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.

For roofing companies

How does a roofing company get listed as verified?

If your roofing company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with the roofing business insurance page, or the S280 roofing contractor license guide if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured roofer in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require roofing contractors to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work, yes. A business that offers or contracts to perform roofing in Utah needs a DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers the work, commonly S280 roofing contractor. The current DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation evidence or a Labor Commission waiver. Small jobs below Utah’s handyman exemption threshold may be done without a contractor license, so confirm which applies to your job.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City roofer?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL contractor license in a roofing or general building classification. Insured usually means it carries general liability and, if it has employees, workers compensation, often with commercial auto for its trucks. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance; it means the business met DOPL’s requirements when the license was issued and has kept it renewed. The lookup and the certificate are the evidence.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City roofer is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the salesperson’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers roofing, such as S280. A city business license or a manufacturer certification is a different credential and does not replace the contractor license. Five companies on this list display a license number on their own websites, which makes the search faster.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City roofer is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your job, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Does a roofer’s insurance cover damage to my home or an injury on my property?+

It depends on the policy and the cause. General liability can respond when a roofer’s work damages other property, such as a leak that ruins ceilings after a tear-off, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to redo the roofer’s own defective work. Injuries to the roofer’s crew are a workers compensation matter, which is why a roofer with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate; roofing is fall-exposed work, and an uninsured crew injury can become the homeowner’s problem.

Do Utah roofers have to be bonded?+

Not as a general condition of the DOPL contractor license. The current DOPL contractor application covers the qualifier, experience, course, business entity, general liability certificate, and workers compensation evidence or waiver; it does not list a general surety bond. Some cities require a bond with a building permit, and some commercial contracts require performance bonds. When a roofer’s website says "bonded," ask which bond it holds and what it covers.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

Does a one-person roofing business in Utah need workers compensation?+

A roofing business with no employees can generally submit a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Labor Commission to DOPL instead of carrying a policy; the waiver runs one year and becomes invalid once anyone is hired. DOPL’s current application says to notify DOPL before a first hire starts work. Installers paid on a 1099 are not automatically non-employees, and DOPL says 1099 treatment fits an independently licensed contractor or licensed subcontractor.

What does a Salt Lake City general contractor ask a roofing subcontractor for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City general contractor usually asks a roofing subcontractor for a certificate of insurance showing general liability at or above the limits in the subcontract, the general contractor named as additional insured for ongoing and completed operations, and workers compensation or a verified Utah Labor Commission waiver. The DOPL certificate does not automatically satisfy that request, because a project can require different limits, endorsements, and parties.

How do I get my roofing company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Roofing contractors serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the roofing insurance page.
