Utah licenses contractors by classification, and the classification on a company's license has to cover the work it is doing. The groups below pair each directory with Redoubt's guide to the classification DOPL uses for that trade, so a customer can check the right code in the lookup and a contractor can see what the application asks for.
Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason these lists exist. For each trade, companies were found through public search, each website was read on the review date, and the exact wording of its claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. Companies that state only part of the claim, or that do not name Salt Lake City or Salt Lake County, are left off and counted on each trade page.
For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For the classification paths, see Utah contractor license classifications.
A Utah contractor license is issued by DOPL to the business entity, and the contractor application asks for a general liability certificate plus workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission waiver. Most Salt Lake City contractors also carry commercial auto for work trucks, and general contractors and property managers usually ask a subcontractor for a certificate of insurance before the first day on site.
The license belongs to the business entity, not the crew, and the classification has to match the trade: S280 for roofing, P200 or P201 for plumbing, E200 or E201 for electrical, S310 for excavation and demolition. Each directory below links Redoubt’s guide to its classification.
The contractor application asks for a general liability certificate. Two current DOPL sources state different aggregate figures, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding.
A contractor with employees carries workers compensation. An owner-only business may hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver instead. Which one applies depends on the worker setup, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.
General liability does not cover vehicles. Trucks, vans, and trailers titled to the business need commercial auto, and a personally titled truck used for the business needs its own review before a claim tests it.
Salt Lake City general contractors, developers, and property managers usually ask a sub for a certificate of insurance before work starts, often naming themselves as additional insured and setting minimum limits. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.
Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates on their trade's page. There is no fee.
Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with Utah contractor insurance, or the DOPL setup checker if you are applying for or renewing a license.
It is a set of reviewed lists, one per trade, of companies serving Salt Lake City whose own websites state they are licensed and insured, or bonded and insured for cleaning companies. Each list is alphabetical and unranked, quotes the company’s claim with its source and the date it was read, and shows how to check a Utah DOPL license and a certificate of insurance. Redoubt, a Utah commercial insurance agency, maintains it.
A company is listed when it serves Salt Lake City or Salt Lake County and its own website states the claim for its trade, licensed and insured for DOPL trades or bonded and insured for cleaning. Redoubt records the exact wording, the page it came from, the read date, and any license number the site displays. No company pays to be listed, and companies that state only half of the claim are left off.
Not yet for most of them. A listing marked self-reported records what the company’s website said on the review date; Redoubt has not run the DOPL lookup or read a certificate of insurance for it. A listing marked verified means Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup and reviewed a current certificate, each on a recorded date. The label describes those dates, not today.
Search the business’s legal name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search and confirm the status is Active and the classification covers the work. Then ask the company for a certificate of insurance, check that the named insured matches the licensed entity, that general liability is listed, and that the policy dates cover your job. Ask about workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver, and call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.
No. Cleaning companies are not licensed by DOPL as contractors, which is why that list checks for bonded and insured instead. The other trades here fall under DOPL contractor classifications, from general contractor licenses to specialty codes such as S280 for roofing or P200 for plumbing, and each directory links Redoubt’s guide for its classification. Small jobs under Utah’s handyman exemption may be done without a contractor license.
No. Every list is alphabetical, no company is ranked or recommended over another, and no company paid to appear. Redoubt does not perform any of the trades listed and is not affiliated with any listed company. The pages exist because Redoubt reads contractor certificates of insurance every day and can tell customers what the licensed-and-insured claim should look like on paper.
Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if the business has employees, together with the legal name the DOPL contractor license is issued under. Redoubt checks the license in DOPL’s lookup, matches the named insured to that entity, and lists the company as verified with both dates. There is no fee. Businesses that need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first can get a quote from Redoubt.
