By type of work

Which of these drywall contractors does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, availability, and pricing with the company directly. Several also paint; if painting is the main job, the Salt Lake City painting contractors list covers painters, who work under the same S270 classification.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah drywall contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 26, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers drywall, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Twenty-four additional companies that came up in research were not listed. Eight because their websites do not state that they are licensed and insured. Two drywall repair franchise locations whose sites say their technicians are insured but never say the business is licensed. Three handyman or home repair companies for which drywall is one service among many. Three sites that read as lead-generation pages rather than a contractor with its own crews: one covers dozens of unrelated trades, and two name no owner, office address, legal entity, or license number. Four whose websites did not load, one with no website of its own, two whose sites never name Salt Lake City or Salt Lake County, and one metal framing contractor that does not offer drywall. Companies that later state both parts of the claim on their own sites, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

  • September 26, 2026. First published with 13 companies. All listings are self-reported. Of these, 4 display a contractor license number on their own websites.
Before you book

How do you check a drywall contractor's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. Small patch jobs below Utah's handyman exemption threshold may be done without a contractor license, so confirm which applies to your job. For what the drywall classification covers, from gypsum board and non-bearing metal partitions to ceiling tile and grid, see the S270 section of the specialty contractor classifications guide; structural metal studs and bearing walls fall under the S220 carpentry classification.

For what the policies themselves cover, see Utah contractor insurance and painting contractor insurance, which covers the S270 classification drywall shares with painting.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover the drywall work, usually S270 Drywall, Paint, and Plastering. If the job includes framing with structural metal studs or bearing walls, that part points to S220. A city business license is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. For a franchise location, that is usually the local owner’s entity, not the national brand.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to keep general liability in force with the Division as certificate holder, so the certificate should show it, and DOPL’s current materials call for at least $1 million per occurrence. The policy period should cover the days of the job, and the limit should be listed, not blank.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

A drywall crew with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For drywall contractors

What does a Salt Lake City drywall contractor need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City drywall contractor holds a Utah DOPL contractor license, usually S270 Drywall, Paint, and Plastering Contractor, issued to the business entity. DOPL’s contractor application asks for a general liability certificate naming the Division as certificate holder, plus a workers compensation certificate for a company with employees or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver for an owner-only business. Builders and general contractors ask for their own certificate before the crew hangs board.

  1. 1

Hold S270 in the business’s name.

S270 Drywall, Paint, and Plastering Contractor is the DOPL specialty classification for drywall, gypsum, and wallboard assemblies, lightweight metal and non-bearing partitions, ceiling tile and grid, stucco and plaster, and coatings. The license is issued to the business entity with a qualifier attached. Structural metal studs and bearing walls point to S220 instead, and a whole-remodel contract points to R101, B100, or R100, so confirm the scope with DOPL.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at DOPL’s current limits.

DOPL requires active general liability naming the Division as certificate holder, with the named insured matching the licensed entity exactly, including any DBA. Two current DOPL sources disagree on the aggregate, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding coverage; do not assume the lower aggregate is enough.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A drywall company with employees carries workers compensation, and DOPL asks for the certificate at application and renewal. An owner-only hanger or finisher may instead submit a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Labor Commission, which costs a $50 nonrefundable fee, runs one year, and becomes invalid once anyone is hired. Paying helpers on a 1099 does not settle the question; the actual working relationship does.

  4. 4

Separate damage to other property from redoing your own work.

General liability is oriented to damage a crew causes to property it was not hired to work on, such as flooring or finished surfaces scratched while board goes in, and to third-party injury. Redoing seams or texture the customer rejects is a workmanship and warranty matter, not a claim. Tell the insurer about occupied-building work, spray application, scaffolding, and silica or surface-preparation exposure, which shape how the policy is underwritten.

  5. 5

Expect certificate requests from GCs and property managers.

Salt Lake City general contractors and property managers ask a drywall subcontractor for a certificate of insurance before the crew starts, naming themselves as additional insured, setting minimum limits, and expecting workers compensation or a verified waiver on it. Certificates are rejected when the named insured does not match the licensed entity or wording is missing. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.

For drywall contractors

How does a drywall contractor get listed as verified?

If your drywall company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with Utah contractor insurance or the painting contractor insurance page, which covers S270 work, or the S270 classification guide if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured drywall contractor in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require drywall contractors to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work, yes. A business that contracts to hang, finish, or texture drywall in Utah needs a DOPL contractor license, usually S270 Drywall, Paint, and Plastering Contractor, or a general classification when drywall is part of a remodel. DOPL’s current application asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation evidence or a Labor Commission waiver. Small jobs below Utah’s handyman exemption threshold may be done without a contractor license, so confirm which applies to your job.

Which DOPL license covers drywall, metal framing, and ceilings?+

S270 Drywall, Paint, and Plastering Contractor is Utah’s specialty classification for drywall, gypsum, and wallboard panels and assemblies. It also covers lightweight metal and non-bearing wall partitions, ceiling tile and panels with their grid, specified insulation, stucco and plaster, and paints and coatings. Framing with structural metal studs or bearing walls points to S220 instead, so ask a drywall company that frames bearing walls which classification covers that part of the job.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City drywall contractor is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew’s name; for a franchise location, that is the local owner’s entity, not the national brand. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers drywall, such as S270. A city business license is a different credential. Some companies on this list display a license number on their own websites.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City drywall contractor is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your job, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Does a drywall contractor’s insurance cover damage to my home?+

It depends on what was damaged. General liability can respond when a drywall crew’s work damages other property, such as a pipe punctured behind a wall or flooring scratched while board is carried in, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to redo the contractor’s own unsatisfactory work, such as visible seams or a texture that does not match; that is a warranty question. Ask how the company handles dust control and cleanup, too.

Can someone without a contractor license patch drywall in Utah?+

Sometimes. Small jobs below Utah’s handyman exemption threshold may be done without a contractor license, so confirm which applies to your job before hiring someone unlicensed for a patch. Larger work, such as hanging and finishing a basement or repairing drywall as part of a bigger project, generally calls for a licensed contractor. Whoever does the work, ask whether they carry general liability; being exempt from licensing does not make anyone insured.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the drywall company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

What does a Salt Lake City general contractor ask a drywall subcontractor for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City general contractor usually asks a drywall subcontractor for a certificate of insurance showing general liability at or above the limits in the subcontract, the general contractor named as additional insured, often for ongoing and completed operations, and workers compensation or a verified Utah Labor Commission waiver. Additional insured status comes from an endorsement on the policy, not from listing a name on the certificate.

What does DOPL ask a Utah drywall contractor for when the license renews?+

When a Utah drywall contractor’s S270 license renews, DOPL expects general liability to be in force for the licensed scope with the Division as certificate holder, and the workers compensation side to match the worker setup: a current workers compensation certificate if the company has employees, or a current Utah Labor Commission waiver, which runs one year and must be renewed, if it has none. Requirements depend on the business, worker setup, and current DOPL instructions.

How do I get my drywall company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Drywall contractors serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the Utah contractor insurance page.
