By type of work

Which of these painters does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah painting contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 25, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers painting, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Fifteen additional companies that came up in research were not listed. Nine because their websites do not state that they are licensed and insured, including one whose licensing and insurance answer is an unfilled placeholder and one Colorado-based company whose Salt Lake City page no longer loads; one that states it is insured and bondable but not that it holds a Utah contractor license; one that has no website; and four whose websites did not load or served no readable text. Companies that later state both parts of the claim on their own sites, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

  • September 25, 2026. First published with 17 companies. All listings are self-reported. 3 of them display a contractor license number on their own websites.
Before you book

How do you check a painting contractor's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For where painting sits among the specialty classifications, see the specialty contractor classifications guide. For what the policies themselves cover, including overspray and damage to nearby property, see painting contractor insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover painting. DOPL's contractor application lists S270, Drywall, Paint, and Plastering Contractor, as the specialty classification for painting; if a company holds a different classification, ask which one covers the painting scope. A city business license is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. For franchise locations, that is usually the local owner’s entity, not the national brand.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to keep general liability in force with the Division as certificate holder, so the certificate should show it. The current DOPL contractor application asks for $1,000,000 per occurrence. The policy period should cover the days of the job, and the limit should be listed, not blank.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

A painting crew with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For painting contractors

What does a Salt Lake City painting contractor need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City painting contractor holds a Utah DOPL contractor license, usually S270 Drywall, Paint, and Plastering Contractor, issued to the business entity. DOPL requires active general liability naming the Division as certificate holder, plus a workers compensation certificate for a company with employees or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver for an owner-only painter. General contractors and property managers ask for their own certificate before the crew starts, and overspray is the claim that defines the trade.

  1. 1

Hold S270 in the business’s name.

S270 Drywall, Paint, and Plastering Contractor is the specialty classification DOPL’s contractor application lists for painting, and it covers other coatings, stucco and plaster, and drywall. The license is issued to the business entity with a qualifier attached. Every applicant completes the 25-hour pre-licensure course; DOPL applies its Business and Law exam and two-year experience requirement to general classifications, not to every specialty classification. Wallpaper hanging alone is license-exempt.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at DOPL’s current limits.

An S270 application needs a certificate showing active general liability with the Division of Professional Licensing as certificate holder and the licensed business name as named insured, including DBA formatting. DOPL currently publishes two different aggregates, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding rather than relying on a number quoted anywhere else.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A painting company with employees carries workers compensation, and DOPL asks for the certificate at application and renewal. An owner-only painter may instead hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Labor Commission, which runs one year and becomes invalid once anyone is hired. Painters on 1099s may still count as employees depending on how the work is directed and controlled, a frequent source of audit charges.

  4. 4

Treat overspray as the claim that defines the trade.

The claim that defines painting is damage to property the crew was never hired to paint: a car in the lot, a neighboring building, or an interior surface that should have been masked. That is third-party property damage, where general liability is oriented; repainting work the customer dislikes is a workmanship and warranty matter. Exterior and multi-story work adds ladder, lift, and scaffolding exposure, which should be disclosed accurately.

  5. 5

Expect certificate requests from GCs and property managers.

Salt Lake City general contractors and property management companies usually want a certificate of insurance before a painting crew starts, naming themselves as additional insured, often for ongoing and completed operations, setting minimum limits, and showing workers compensation or a verified waiver. Painting subcontracts often specify the exact additional insured wording, so send the exhibit itself. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.

For painting contractors

How does a painting contractor get listed as verified?

If your painting company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with the painting contractor insurance page, or the specialty contractor classifications guide if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured painter in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require painting contractors to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work above the exemption thresholds, yes. A business that contracts to paint in Utah needs a DOPL contractor license; DOPL’s current contractor application lists S270, Drywall, Paint, and Plastering Contractor, as the specialty classification for painting. The same application requires active general liability insurance with DOPL as certificate holder, plus workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver. Small jobs under Utah’s handyman exemption may be done without a license.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City painter?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers painting. Insured usually means it carries general liability and, if it has employees, workers compensation, often with commercial auto for its vans. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance; it means the business met DOPL’s requirements when the license was issued and has kept it renewed. The lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City painting contractor is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers painting, such as S270. A city business license is a different credential and does not replace it. A few companies on this list display a license number on their own websites, which makes the search faster.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City painter is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your job, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Does a painter’s insurance cover overspray or damage to my property?+

It depends on what was damaged. General liability can respond when a painter’s work damages other property, such as overspray on a car, a neighbor’s siding, or flooring that was not masked, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to redo the painter’s own unsatisfactory work; that is a warranty question. Ask the company how it handles overspray and touch-ups, and get its policy in writing before the job.

Do Utah painting contractors have to be bonded?+

Not as a general condition of the DOPL contractor license. The current DOPL contractor application checklist covers the qualifier, the pre-licensure course, the business entity, a general liability certificate, and workers compensation evidence or a waiver; it does not ask every applicant for a surety bond, though DOPL can require one in some cases. When a painter’s website says "bonded," ask which bond it holds, what it covers, and who it protects.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

Does a one-person painting business in Utah need workers compensation?+

A painting business with no employees can generally submit a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Labor Commission to DOPL instead of carrying a policy. The waiver costs a $50 nonrefundable fee, runs one year, and becomes invalid once anyone is hired, and DOPL must then be notified before that person starts work. Painters paid on a 1099 may still count as employees depending on how the work is directed and controlled.

What does a Salt Lake City property manager or general contractor ask a painting contractor for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City property manager or general contractor usually asks a painting contractor for a certificate of insurance showing general liability at or above the limits in the contract, the requesting company named as additional insured, often for ongoing and completed operations, and workers compensation or a verified Utah Labor Commission waiver. Additional insured status comes from an endorsement on the policy, not from a name typed on the certificate.

How do I get my painting company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Painting contractors serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the painting contractor insurance page.
