Licensed and insured flooring contractors in Salt Lake City

As of September 26, 2026, Redoubt has reviewed 15 flooring contractors serving Salt Lake City whose own websites state they are licensed and insured. None has yet been checked in DOPL’s license lookup or sent Redoubt a certificate of insurance, so every listing below is marked self-reported. Companies are listed alphabetically, not ranked.

Maintained by Redoubt, a licensed Utah commercial insurance agency at 56 East 300 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, and reviewed by Andre Beukers, its principal. Redoubt does not sell or install flooring and is not paid by any company on this page. Corrections go to hello@redoubt.agency.

The list

15 Salt Lake City flooring contractors that state they are licensed and insured

Alphabetical, not ranked. The list covers hardwood installers and refinishers, tile and stone setters, luxury vinyl, laminate, and carpet installers, and commercial flooring contractors. Self-reported means the claim comes from the company's own website and Redoubt has not checked the license or reviewed a certificate. Verified means Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL's license lookup and reviewed a current certificate of insurance, each on the date shown. License numbers are shown only where the company displays one on its own site. Phone numbers and service areas were read from each company's site on September 26, 2026.

One flooring-specific caution: Utah's current rule lists carpet and vinyl floor installation as license-exempt, so for a carpet-only or vinyl-only job the license half of the claim may not apply. Hardwood, laminate, tile, and subfloor work is named in the S220 carpentry and flooring scope. Insurance matters for every kind of floor.

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Several companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, materials, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah carpentry and flooring contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 26, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. Flooring stores were included only when their own sites say they install and state the claim. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers the work, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: About forty other flooring companies, showrooms, and networks came up in research and were not listed. Twenty-two, including several showrooms and franchise locations, do not state the claim on their own websites. One shows a license number but never mentions insurance. Four state the claim only on directory or classified listings, with no working website of their own that Redoubt could find. Seven sites were dead, unreachable, or now belong to someone else. Five are referral networks or national retailers rather than local installation companies, and three do other work, such as bathroom remodeling, or do not serve Salt Lake County. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

Before you sign

How do you check a flooring contractor's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For which flooring work the carpentry and flooring classification covers, and why carpet and vinyl are treated differently, see the S220 carpentry and flooring license guide. Tile and stone setters can also fall under the S230 classification. For what the policies themselves cover, see Utah contractor insurance and general liability insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the installer's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover the work: S220 for hardwood, laminate, tile, and subfloors, S230 for tile and stone products, or a general classification such as B100 or R100. Carpet and vinyl installation is license-exempt under the current rule, so a carpet-only installer may have no contractor license at all. A city business license is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. If a flooring store sells the job and a separate crew installs it, ask for the installer’s certificate too.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires licensed contractors to carry general liability, so the certificate should show it. DOPL’s current application and its specialty contractor webpage both list $1 million per occurrence, but they state different aggregate limits. The policy period should cover the install dates, and the limit should be listed, not blank. Water damage or a failed install can show up after the crew leaves, so ask whether the policy covers completed work.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

A flooring crew with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For flooring companies

What does a Salt Lake City flooring company need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City flooring company that installs hardwood, laminate, tile, or subfloors holds a Utah DOPL contractor license in S220 Carpentry and Flooring, issued to the business entity, while carpet and vinyl installation is license-exempt under the current rule. The DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and either workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver, and Salt Lake City general contractors ask for a certificate of insurance before the crew starts.

  1. 1

Hold S220 for the flooring that needs a license.

DOPL issues the contractor license to the business entity, not the installer. S220 Carpentry and Flooring names laminate, tile, cement, wood, and synthetic-wood flooring, plus underlayment, subfloors, sanding, staining, and finishing. The current rule lists carpet and vinyl floor installation as license-exempt, and Utah’s project-value exemption covers some small jobs, but the exemption belongs to the activity, so subfloor repair or a mixed contract can still need the license.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at the limits DOPL currently asks for.

The DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder, with the insured name matching the legal business name on the application. Two current DOPL sources state different aggregate figures, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding coverage.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A flooring company with employees carries workers compensation and shows it on the certificate. An owner-only shop with no employees may instead hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission, which is not an insurance policy. Which path applies depends on the actual worker setup, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Expect claims that surface after the crew leaves.

General liability can respond when flooring work damages other property or injures someone, such as a punctured water line that soaks nearby walls or a guest who trips on a loose transition. Water damage or a failed install can show up after the job is finished, so completed operations coverage matters. The policy generally does not pay to redo the company’s own faulty installation.

  5. 5

Have the certificate ready for builders and property managers.

Salt Lake City general contractors, builders, and property managers usually ask a flooring subcontractor for a certificate of insurance before the first day on site, often naming themselves as additional insured, setting minimum limits, and asking for workers compensation evidence or the waiver. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.

For flooring companies

How does a flooring company get listed as verified?

If your flooring company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with the Utah contractor insurance page or the general liability insurance guide, or the S220 carpentry and flooring license guide if you are applying for or adding the classification.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured flooring contractor in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require flooring contractors to be licensed and insured?+

It depends on the flooring. Utah’s S220 Carpentry and Flooring Contractor classification covers laminate, tile, cement, wood, synthetic wood, and similar flooring, including sanding, staining, finishing, underlayment, and subfloors, and S230 covers tile and stone. The current rule lists carpet and vinyl floor installation as license-exempt, and small jobs under Utah’s handyman exemption may not need a license either. For licensed work, DOPL’s application asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation or a waiver.

Does a carpet or vinyl installer need a contractor license in Utah?+

Often not. Utah’s current rule, R156-55a-301(7), lists carpet and vinyl floor installation among activities that do not require a contractor license, regardless of project value. The exemption belongs to the activity, not the whole business, so subfloor repair, hardwood, tile, or a mixed contract can still require one. That is why “licensed” matters most for hardwood, tile, and subfloor work. Insurance matters either way, because any installer can damage a home or be hurt on the job.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City flooring contractor?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers the flooring it installs, such as S220, S230 for tile and stone, or a general classification such as B100 or R100. Insured usually means it carries general liability and, if it has employees, workers compensation, often with commercial auto for its vans. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance. The DOPL lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City flooring contractor is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the installer’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers the work, such as S220 for hardwood, laminate, tile, and subfloors, S230 for tile and stone, or B100 or R100. One company on this list displays a license number on its own site, which makes the search faster.

How do I check whether a flooring contractor is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the business on your estimate, that the dates cover your install, and that general liability is listed. Ask about workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Does a flooring contractor’s insurance cover damage to my home?+

It depends on what caused the damage. General liability can respond when a flooring contractor’s work damages other property or injures someone, such as a punctured water line that soaks nearby walls or a guest who trips on a loose transition after the job, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to redo the contractor’s own faulty installation. Ask how the company handles damage and rework, and get its warranty in writing.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the flooring company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

Does a one-person flooring business in Utah need workers compensation?+

A one-person flooring business with no employees may not need a workers compensation policy for its DOPL license. The current DOPL contractor application lets a no-employee applicant submit a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission instead, which has a one-year term and is not insurance. Hiring anyone makes the waiver invalid and requires coverage, and a 1099 label does not settle worker status. General contractors may still ask for a workers comp certificate.

What does a Salt Lake City general contractor ask a flooring company for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City general contractor or builder usually asks a flooring subcontractor for a certificate of insurance before the first day on site. The request commonly names the GC as certificate holder or additional insured, sets minimum general liability limits, and asks for workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver, sometimes with primary and noncontributory wording. Each request should be checked against the actual policy, because a certificate cannot add coverage the policy does not provide.

How do I get my flooring company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Flooring contractors serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the Utah contractor insurance page.
