Licensed and insured electricians in Salt Lake City

As of September 25, 2026, Redoubt has reviewed 18 electrical contractors serving Salt Lake City whose own websites state they are licensed and insured. None has yet been checked in DOPL’s license lookup or sent Redoubt a certificate of insurance, so every listing below is marked self-reported. Companies are listed alphabetically, not ranked.

Maintained by Redoubt, a licensed Utah commercial insurance agency at 56 East 300 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, and reviewed by Andre Beukers, its principal. Redoubt does not do electrical work and is not paid by any company on this page. Corrections go to hello@redoubt.agency.

By type of work

Which of these electricians does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah electrical contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 25, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in an electrical classification, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Five additional companies that came up in research were not listed. Three never state on their own websites that the business is insured, although two of them mention a license or display a license number; one describes itself as a service that connects homeowners with electricians rather than a contractor with its own crews; and one has a website that could not be reached. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

  • September 25, 2026. First published with 18 companies. All listings are self-reported. 4 of them display a Utah license number on their own websites.
Before you book

How do you check an electrician's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For the difference between an electrician's license and an electrical contractor license, and which insurance documents DOPL asks for, see the E200 and E201 electrical contractor license guide. For what the policies themselves cover, including faulty work versus resulting damage, see electrician insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The contractor license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover electrical work, such as E200 or E201. Utah contractor license numbers end in -5501. A journeyman or master electrician license belongs to a person and has a different suffix; two companies on this list display a number ending in -5502 that their sites attribute to an individual electrician, so search the business name as well.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. When a home services company or a brand with several offices does the work, the certificate should name the Utah entity that actually holds the license.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to carry general liability, so the certificate should show it. The current DOPL contractor application asks for $1,000,000 per incident; the E200 and E201 guide covers the aggregate limit, which DOPL sources state differently. The policy period should cover the day of the work, and the limit should be listed, not blank.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

An electrical contractor with employees or apprentices should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For electrical contractors

What does a Salt Lake City electrical contractor need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City electrical contractor holds a DOPL contractor license in an electrical classification, E200 for general electrical work or E201 for residential, issued to the business entity, while the electricians hold individual apprentice, journeyman, or master licenses. The DOPL contractor application asks the business for a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder and for workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission waiver. Most also carry commercial auto for work vans.

  1. 1

Hold E200 or E201 in the business’s name.

E200 is Utah’s General Electrical Contractor classification and E201 the Residential Electrical Contractor classification; the work scope separates them. Both are issued to the business, not the electrician. A master electrician license alone does not create a contractor business: the business names a master electrical qualifier who is a 20% owner or a W-2 manager, and DOPL says a license cannot be loaned or borrowed.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at the limit DOPL currently accepts.

The contractor application asks for a general liability certificate in the exact legal insured name, covering the licensed electrical operations, with DOPL as certificate holder. Two current DOPL sources state different aggregate figures, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the amount with DOPL for your application path before binding rather than copying a limit from a stale checklist.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

An electrical contractor with employees or apprentices carries workers compensation plus the employer registrations the application asks for. A business with no employees and no intent to hire may hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Labor Commission instead; hiring an apprentice moves it off that path. Which applies depends on the worker setup, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Disclose EV charger, solar, and generator work before the job.

Correcting defective wiring is a different question from bodily injury, damage to other property, or an electrical fire that appears after the job, which is where completed operations coverage matters. EV charging, solar, batteries, generators, trenching, and fire alarm work can change carrier appetite or exclusions, so a policy written for basic service and panel upgrades should not be assumed to fit every new operation.

  5. 5

Expect certificate requests from GCs and property managers.

Salt Lake City general contractors and property managers ask an electrical sub for a certificate of insurance before work starts, naming themselves as additional insured, asking for completed operations wording for a stated period after turnover, setting minimum liability limits, and requiring workers compensation evidence. A certificate is evidence of coverage and does not rewrite the policy. An agency can issue it the same day once coverage is bound.

For electrical contractors

How does an electrical contractor get listed as verified?

If your electrical company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees or apprentices, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with the electrician insurance page, or the E200 and E201 electrical contractor license guide if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured electrician in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require electricians to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work, yes. A business that contracts to perform electrical work in Utah needs a DOPL contractor license in an electrical classification, commonly E200 or E201, and the people on the job hold individual electrician licenses. The DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation evidence or a Labor Commission waiver. Utah’s small-job exemption does not cover electrical work beyond components such as an outlet or switch; check Utah Code 58-55-305 before hiring anyone unlicensed.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City electrician?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL electrical contractor license and the people on the job hold individual electrician licenses. Insured usually means the business carries general liability and, if it has employees or apprentices, workers compensation, often with commercial auto for its vans. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance; it means the business met DOPL’s requirements when it was issued and has kept it renewed. The lookup and the certificate are the evidence.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City electrician is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The contractor license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in an electrical classification such as E200 or E201. Utah contractor license numbers end in -5501. A number with a different suffix, such as the -5502 numbers two companies on this list display, is an individual electrician’s license, not the business’s contractor license.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City electrician is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your job, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Does an electrician’s insurance cover a fire or damage to my home?+

It depends on what caused the damage. General liability can respond when an electrician’s work injures someone or damages other property, such as a later electrical fire traced to the installation, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to redo the electrician’s own defective wiring, and completed-operations coverage matters for problems that appear after the job is finished. Ask the company how it handles damage and get its warranty in writing before work starts.

Do Utah electricians have to be bonded?+

Not as a general condition of the DOPL contractor license. The current DOPL contractor application checklist covers the qualifier, experience, course, exam, business entity, general liability certificate, and workers compensation evidence or waiver; it does not ask for a general surety bond. Some cities and utilities require a bond for specific permits or for work in the public right of way. When an electrician’s website says "bonded," ask which bond it holds, in what amount, and what it covers.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

Does a one-person electrical business in Utah need workers compensation?+

Not always. The current DOPL contractor application directs an electrical business with no employees and no intent to hire to submit a Workers’ Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission, and the Labor Commission decides eligibility. The waiver has a one-year term, hiring anyone makes it invalid, and taking on an apprentice moves the business to the workers compensation path before the apprentice performs work. Which applies depends on the worker setup and current DOPL instructions.

What does a Salt Lake City general contractor ask an electrical subcontractor for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City general contractor usually asks an electrical subcontractor for a certificate of insurance showing general liability, with the GC named as additional insured for ongoing operations and for completed operations for a stated period after the job, often with primary and noncontributory wording and a waiver of subrogation. Many also require workers compensation evidence, commercial auto, and umbrella limits. A certificate does not rewrite the policy, so send the insurance exhibit to your agency first.

How do I get my electrical company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees or apprentices, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Electrical contractors serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the electrician insurance page.
