By type of work

Which of these HVAC contractors does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, equipment brands, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah HVAC contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 25, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers HVAC work, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Eleven additional companies that came up in research were not listed. Four do not state the claim on the pages Redoubt read, one describes a gas technician credential rather than a contractor license, and six have websites that could not be read, no longer serve the company, or belong to an out-of-state brand with no Utah-specific claim. Six more companies based outside Salt Lake County do state the claim on their own sites and are queued for the next update. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

  • September 25, 2026. First published with 20 companies. All listings are self-reported. 7 of them display a contractor license number on their own websites.
Before you book

How do you check an HVAC contractor's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For what the H100 HVAC contractor license involves and which insurance documents DOPL asks for, see the H100 HVAC contractor license guide. For what the policies themselves cover, including damage during and after an installation, see HVAC contractor insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the technician's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover HVAC work, such as H100. A city business license or a technician's gas certification is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. For a national brand or a company using a trade name, that is the legal entity that operates the local location, not the name on the van.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to carry general liability and publishes the minimum limits on its current application, so the certificate should show it. The policy period should cover the day of the installation or repair, and the limit should be listed, not blank.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

An HVAC company with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For HVAC companies

What does a Salt Lake City HVAC company need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City HVAC company holds a DOPL contractor license in the H100 classification, which Utah issues to the business entity and groups with the general classifications rather than the specialty trades. The DOPL contractor application asks the business for a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder and for workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission waiver. Most also carry commercial auto for service vans.

  1. 1

Hold H100 in the business’s name.

H100 is Utah’s HVAC contractor classification, issued to the business rather than the technician, and DOPL groups it with the general classifications, so the qualifier passes the Business and Law exam and the H100 trade exam and documents 4,000 hours of HVAC work. The qualifier also holds an RMGA or equivalent Certified Natural Gas Technician credential, and gas-line work carries its own conditions for whoever does it.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at the limit DOPL currently accepts.

The contractor application asks for a general liability certificate in the exact legal insured name, with DOPL as certificate holder and coverage that includes the licensed scope for as long as the license is active. Two current DOPL sources state different aggregates, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

An HVAC company with employees carries workers compensation and the employer registrations the application asks for. A business with no employees and no intent to hire may hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Labor Commission instead, and hiring anyone makes that waiver invalid. Which path applies depends on the worker setup, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Disclose refrigerant work, rooftop work, and staged equipment.

Refrigerant release and combustion byproduct questions are sometimes excluded from a standard general liability form and reviewed separately, and employees on rooftops, in crawlspaces, and around electrical connections are why employer’s liability sits alongside workers compensation. A rooftop unit delivered but not yet installed is typically neither general liability nor the customer’s property insurance; that gap is what an installation floater addresses.

  5. 5

Expect certificate requests from GCs and property managers.

Salt Lake City general contractors and commercial property managers usually ask an HVAC sub for a certificate of insurance before work starts, naming themselves as additional insured for ongoing and completed operations, setting minimum limits that often exceed a base general liability policy, and asking for workers compensation evidence. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.

For HVAC companies

How does an HVAC company get listed as verified?

If your heating and air conditioning company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with the HVAC contractor insurance page, or the H100 HVAC contractor license guide if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured HVAC contractor in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require HVAC contractors to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work, yes. A business that offers or contracts to perform heating and air conditioning work in Utah needs a DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers HVAC, which Utah licenses under H100. The current DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate naming the Division and either workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission waiver. Small jobs below Utah’s handyman exemption threshold may be done without a contractor license, so confirm which applies to your job.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City HVAC contractor?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL contractor license covering HVAC work. Insured usually means the business carries general liability and, if it has employees, workers compensation, often with commercial auto for its service vans. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance; it means the business met DOPL’s requirements when the license was issued and has kept it renewed. The DOPL lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City HVAC contractor is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the technician’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers HVAC work, such as H100. A city business license or a technician’s gas certification is a different credential and does not replace the contractor license. Several companies on this list display their license number on their own websites, which makes the search faster.

How do I check whether an HVAC contractor is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your installation date, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Does an HVAC contractor’s insurance cover damage to my home during a furnace or AC installation?+

It depends on what was damaged and when. General liability can respond when the contractor’s work damages other property, such as a condensate leak that ruins a ceiling or a gas or electrical fault that causes a fire, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to redo the contractor’s own defective work, and a new unit sitting on site before installation may not be covered by either policy. Ask how the company handles damage and get its policy in writing before the job.

Do Utah HVAC contractors have to be bonded?+

Not as a general condition of the DOPL contractor license. The current DOPL contractor application checklist covers the qualifier, experience, courses, exams, business entity, general liability certificate, and workers compensation evidence or waiver; it does not ask for a general surety bond. Some cities and utilities require a bond for specific permits or work in the public right of way. When an HVAC contractor’s website says "bonded," ask which bond it holds and what it covers.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

Does a one-person HVAC business in Utah need workers compensation?+

Not always. The current DOPL contractor application directs an HVAC business with no employees and no intent to hire to submit a Workers’ Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission instead, and the Labor Commission decides eligibility. The waiver has a one-year term, hiring anyone makes it invalid, and a helper paid on a 1099 does not by itself settle worker status. Which applies depends on the worker setup and current DOPL instructions.

What does a Salt Lake City general contractor ask an HVAC subcontractor for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City general contractor usually asks an HVAC subcontractor for a certificate of insurance showing general liability, with the GC named as additional insured for both ongoing and completed operations, which are two separate endorsements. Many also require workers compensation evidence, commercial auto, and umbrella limits above a base policy. A certificate listing an endorsement is not the same as the endorsement being on the policy, so send the exhibit to your agency first.

How do I get my HVAC company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. HVAC contractors serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the HVAC contractor insurance page.
