Licensed and insured plumbers in Salt Lake City

As of September 25, 2026, Redoubt has reviewed 19 plumbing companies serving Salt Lake City whose own websites state they are licensed and insured. 6 of them display a Utah contractor license number on their own sites. None has yet been checked in DOPL’s license lookup or sent Redoubt a certificate of insurance, so every listing below is marked self-reported. Companies are listed alphabetically, not ranked.

Maintained by Redoubt, a licensed Utah commercial insurance agency at 56 East 300 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, and reviewed by Andre Beukers, its principal. Redoubt does not do plumbing work and is not paid by any company on this page. Corrections go to hello@redoubt.agency.

The list

19 Salt Lake City plumbers that state they are licensed and insured

Alphabetical, not ranked. Self-reported means the claim comes from the company's own website and Redoubt has not checked the license or reviewed a certificate. Verified means Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL's license lookup and reviewed a current certificate of insurance, each on the date shown. License numbers are shown only where the company displays one on its own site, and Redoubt has not checked them. Phone numbers and service areas were read from each company's site on September 25, 2026.

By type of work

Which of these plumbers does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah plumbing contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 25, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a plumbing classification, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Six additional companies that came up in research were not listed. Two show a license number or licensing wording on their websites but do not state that they are insured, one reads as a referral platform rather than a single plumbing contractor, one is reported closed, one is a general contractor whose site lists plumbing among dozens of other services, and one is a plumbing brand that a listed company's site says it acquired. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

  • September 25, 2026. First published with 19 companies. All listings are self-reported. 6 of them display a contractor license number on their own websites; none has yet been checked in DOPL’s lookup by Redoubt.
Before you book

How do you check a plumber's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For what a plumbing contractor license involves and which insurance documents DOPL asks for, see the P200 and P201 plumbing contractor license guide. For what the policies themselves cover, including water damage, see plumber insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover plumbing, such as P200 or P201. A city business license or an individual plumber's license is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. For franchise locations, that is usually the local owner’s entity, not the national brand.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

Utah’s contractor application asks plumbing contractors for a general liability certificate, so the certificate should show general liability. The current application lists $1 million per incident, and the aggregate figure differs between DOPL’s web copy and the application, so treat the exact numbers as DOPL’s to confirm. The policy period should cover the day of the work, and the limits should be listed, not blank.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

A plumber with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For plumbing companies

What does a Salt Lake City plumbing company need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City plumbing company holds a DOPL contractor license in a plumbing classification, P200 for general plumbing or P201 for residential, issued to the business entity, while the plumbers on its crew hold their own individual licenses. The DOPL contractor application asks the business for a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder and for workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission waiver. Most also carry commercial auto for service vans.

  1. 1

Hold P200 or P201 in the business’s name.

P200 is Utah’s General Plumbing Contractor classification and includes the residential P201 scope; P201 is limited to residential buildings of up to four units. Both are issued to the business, not the plumber. Apprentice, journeyman, and master plumber licenses belong to people, and the business names a master plumber qualifier who is a 20% owner or a W-2 manager.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at the limit DOPL currently accepts.

The contractor application asks for a general liability certificate in the exact legal insured name with DOPL as certificate holder. Two current DOPL sources state different aggregate figures, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the amount with DOPL for your application path before binding. The policy should cover the plumbing operations the business actually sells.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A plumbing company with employees, helpers, or apprentices carries workers compensation, and the application also asks for unemployment registration and a Utah withholding account or PEO documentation. An owner-only business with no intent to hire may hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Labor Commission instead. Which applies depends on the worker setup, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Disclose gas piping, water heaters, and hot work before the job.

Gas piping, fuel connections, water heaters, torch or soldering work, and sewer or excavation work can change carrier appetite and exclusions, so an ordinary service-plumber policy should not be assumed to include them. Water damage is the trade’s core loss question: correcting defective work, resulting damage to other property, and a leak that appears after completion are separate questions, and completed operations matters for the last one.

  5. 5

Expect certificate requests from GCs and property managers.

Salt Lake City general contractors, property managers, and commercial customers usually ask a plumbing sub for a certificate of insurance before work starts, often naming themselves as additional insured, asking for ongoing and completed operations wording, and setting minimum limits for liability, auto, and workers comp. A certificate is evidence of coverage, not an endorsement, and an agency can issue it the same day once coverage is bound.

How does a plumbing company get listed as verified?

If your plumbing company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with the plumber insurance page, or the P200 and P201 plumbing contractor license guide if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured plumber in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require plumbers to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work, yes. A business that offers or contracts to perform plumbing in Utah needs a DOPL contractor license in a plumbing classification, commonly P200 or P201, and the plumbers on the job hold individual apprentice, journeyman, or master licenses. The current DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation evidence or a Labor Commission waiver. Small jobs below Utah’s handyman exemption threshold may be done without a contractor license, so confirm which applies to your job.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City plumber?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL plumbing contractor license and the people on the job hold individual plumber licenses. Insured usually means the business carries general liability and, if it has employees, workers compensation, often with commercial auto for its vans. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance; it means the business met DOPL’s requirements when it was issued and has kept it renewed. The lookup and the certificate are the evidence.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City plumber is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in a plumbing classification such as P200 or P201. A city business license or an individual plumber’s license is a different credential and does not replace the contractor license. Six companies on this list display their license number on their own websites, which makes the search faster.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City plumber is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your job, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Does a plumber’s insurance cover water damage to my home?+

It depends on what caused the damage. General liability can respond when a plumber’s work damages other property, such as a failed connection that ruins flooring or drywall, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to redo the plumber’s own defective work, and damage to property in the plumber’s care during the job can be limited. Ask the company how it handles damage and get its policy in writing before the job.

Do Utah plumbers have to be bonded?+

Not as a general condition of the DOPL contractor license. The application steps covered in Redoubt’s P200 and P201 guide are the qualifier, experience, course, exam, business entity, general liability certificate, and workers compensation evidence or waiver; a general surety bond is not among them. Some cities and utilities require a bond for work in the public right of way, such as sewer or water main connections. When a plumber’s website says "bonded," ask which bond it holds and what it covers.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

Does a one-person plumbing business in Utah need workers compensation?+

Not always. The current DOPL contractor application directs a plumbing business with no employees and no intent to hire to submit a Workers’ Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission, and the Labor Commission decides eligibility. The waiver has a one-year term, hiring anyone makes it invalid, and a helper or apprentice moves the business to the workers compensation path. Which applies depends on the worker setup and current DOPL instructions.

What does a Salt Lake City general contractor ask a plumbing subcontractor for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City general contractor usually asks a plumbing subcontractor for a certificate of insurance showing general liability at the limits in the subcontract, with the GC named as additional insured for ongoing and completed operations, often with primary and noncontributory wording and a waiver of subrogation. Many also require workers compensation evidence, commercial auto, and umbrella limits. A certificate cannot add endorsements the policy lacks, so send the insurance exhibit to your agency first.

How do I get my plumbing company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Plumbing contractors serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the plumber insurance page.
