Licensed and insured excavation contractors in Salt Lake City

As of September 25, 2026, Redoubt has reviewed 20 excavation, foundation, and demolition contractors serving Salt Lake City whose own websites state they are licensed and insured. None has yet been checked in DOPL’s license lookup or sent Redoubt a certificate of insurance, so every listing below is marked self-reported. Companies are listed alphabetically, not ranked.

Maintained by Redoubt, a licensed Utah commercial insurance agency at 56 East 300 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, and reviewed by Andre Beukers, its principal. Redoubt does not do excavation work and is not paid by any company on this page. Corrections go to hello@redoubt.agency.

By type of work

Which of these contractors does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, equipment, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah excavation contractors prepare for DOPL and for general contractors. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 25, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers excavation, foundation, or demolition work, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: More than 40 other companies came up in research and were not listed. Eleven state only part of the claim on their own websites, usually a license or license number with no insurance wording. Most of the rest never state the claim on their own sites, have a site Redoubt could not read, or have no website of their own. A few were left off because they present a different trade with excavation on the side, are multi-city lead-generation pages, or use a keyword brand name with no identifiable business, address, or license number behind it. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

  • September 25, 2026. First published with 20 companies. All listings are self-reported. 5 of them display a contractor license number on their own websites.
Before you break ground

How do you check an excavation contractor's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For what the S310 classification covers and which insurance documents DOPL asks for, see the S310 foundation, excavation, and demolition contractor guide. For what the policies themselves cover, including underground utility damage and equipment, see excavation contractor insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the operator's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover the work: S310 covers foundation, excavation, and demolition work, and a general engineering classification such as E100 covers larger site and utility work. A city business license is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. If the certificate names a company you do not recognize, ask how it relates to the crew and equipment showing up on your lot.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to carry general liability, so the certificate should show it. Compare the limits against the ones on DOPL’s current contractor application rather than a number quoted elsewhere, and make sure the policy period covers the day of the dig. If the job involves trenching near buried lines, ask whether the policy limits or excludes underground property damage.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

A contractor with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person operator may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For excavation contractors

What does a Salt Lake City excavation contractor need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City excavation contractor holds a Utah DOPL contractor license, usually S310 Foundation, Excavation, and Demolition Contractor, issued to the business entity. The DOPL application asks for a general liability certificate naming the Division as certificate holder plus a workers compensation certificate or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver for an owner-only business. Most also carry commercial auto and equipment coverage, and Utah’s one-call law requires locating utilities through Blue Stakes of Utah (811) before digging.

  1. 1

Hold S310 in the business entity’s name.

DOPL’s S310 Foundation, Excavation, and Demolition Contractor classification expressly covers cut, fill, excavation, grading, trenching, and backfilling as practiced in construction. The license belongs to the business entity, not the operator, so the legal name on the application, the certificate, and the estimate should match. Larger site and utility packages can raise an E100 general engineering question, so compare the contracted scope with the current DOPL rule.

  2. 2

Carry general liability with DOPL as certificate holder.

The contractor application asks for an active general liability certificate covering the licensed scope, issued with the Division of Professional Licensing as certificate holder and matching the licensed business name exactly. Two current DOPL sources state different aggregate figures, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A business with employees carries workers compensation and submits the certificate with DOPL named. An owner-only business may hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission instead; the waiver has a one-year term and becomes invalid once the business hires. Which path applies depends on the worker setup and current agency instructions, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Disclose trenching, utility work, and equipment before quoting.

Striking a buried line is the trade’s signature claim, and some general liability forms limit or exclude underground property or earth-movement damage, so ask how yours reads. Utah’s one-call law requires locating utilities through Blue Stakes of Utah (811) before digging. Underwriters also ask about trench depth and whether you shore, shield, or slope, and excavators, skid steers, and trenchers need their own equipment coverage.

  5. 5

Expect certificate requests from GCs, developers, and utilities.

Salt Lake City general contractors, developers, municipalities, and utility contractors usually ask an excavation sub for a certificate of insurance before mobilization, naming themselves as additional insured, setting minimum limits, and often requiring waiver of subrogation, primary and noncontributory wording, or workers comp evidence. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound, so send the insurance exhibit before the deadline, not after.

For excavation contractors

How does an excavation contractor get listed as verified?

If your excavation, foundation, or demolition company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability, equipment coverage, or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes all three. Start with the excavation contractor insurance page, or the S310 contractor license guide if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured excavation contractor in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require excavation contractors to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work, yes. A business that offers or contracts to perform excavation, foundation, or demolition work in Utah needs a DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers it, most often S310 Foundation, Excavation, and Demolition Contractor or a general engineering classification such as E100. The current DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation evidence or a Labor Commission waiver. Jobs below Utah’s handyman exemption threshold may be done without a contractor license, so confirm which applies to your job.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City excavation contractor?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers excavation, foundation, or demolition work. Insured usually means the business carries general liability and, if it has employees, workers compensation, often with commercial auto for its trucks and separate coverage for excavators and other equipment. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance; it means the business met DOPL’s requirements when the license was issued and has kept it renewed.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City excavation contractor is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the operator’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers the work, such as S310 for foundation, excavation, and demolition, or E100 general engineering for larger site and utility work. A city business license is a different credential. Five companies on this list display a license number on their own websites, which makes the search faster.

How do I check whether an excavation contractor is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your dig, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver, and whether its equipment is covered. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Does an excavation contractor’s insurance cover a hit utility line or damage to my property?+

It depends on the policy and what happened. General liability can respond when a contractor’s work damages other property, such as a neighbor’s fence or a driveway, subject to the policy’s terms. Striking a buried line is the trade’s signature claim, and some policies limit or exclude underground property or earth movement, so ask how the company’s policy treats it. Utah’s one-call law requires excavators to have utilities located through Blue Stakes of Utah (811) before digging; ask the company whether it files the locate request.

Do Utah excavation contractors have to be bonded?+

Not as a routine condition of the DOPL contractor license. DOPL may require a bond before issuing a license in some situations, and cities and utilities commonly require a bond for work in the public right of way, such as road cuts and sewer or water taps. Several companies on this list say they are bonded. When a site says "bonded", ask which bond it holds, in what amount, and what it covers, because a right-of-way bond protects the city, not the homeowner.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

Some of these companies are based outside Salt Lake County. Does that matter?+

Each company on this list names Salt Lake City or Salt Lake County as a service area on its own website, even when its office is in Ogden, Layton, Coalville, Oakley, Grantsville, or Rocky Ridge. A DOPL contractor license is issued by the state, so a company based in Summit or Juab County can legally contract for work in Salt Lake County. The practical differences are travel time, mobilization cost, and familiarity with local permits and soils, so ask about all three and check the license and certificate the same way.

Does a one-person excavation business in Utah need workers compensation?+

It depends on the worker setup. An excavation business with no employees may qualify for a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission, which DOPL accepts in place of a workers compensation certificate; the waiver runs one year and becomes invalid once the business hires anyone. A 1099 label does not settle the question, because the actual working relationship matters, and workers comp auditors commonly reclassify uninsured subcontractor labor as payroll.

What does a Salt Lake City general contractor ask an excavation subcontractor for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City general contractor, developer, or municipality hiring an excavation subcontractor usually asks for a certificate showing general liability at or above the limits in the subcontract, the hiring party named as additional insured, and evidence of workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver. Many exhibits also require waiver of subrogation, primary and noncontributory wording, umbrella limits, or special terms for utility and trenching work. Send the exhibit to your agency before the certificate is issued.

How do I get my excavation company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Excavation, foundation, and demolition contractors serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the excavation contractor insurance page.
