Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, equipment, permits, disposal, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah demolition contractors prepare for DOPL, general contractors, and project owners. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 26, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers the demolition work, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Thirty-one other companies and websites came up in research and were not listed. Four state only half of the claim on their own sites, such as a license number with no insurance wording or “insured” with no mention of a license, and six state neither as a direct statement about the company that Redoubt could quote. Six are lead-generation or quote-line sites with no identifiable local operator, five have websites that are private, missing, or redirect elsewhere, one has no website of its own, one national brand shows no Utah location, and one never names Salt Lake City or Salt Lake County. Seven are concrete or excavation companies that list demolition as one service among many. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Before anything comes down

How do you check a demolition contractor's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For what the S310 classification covers, including where interior demolition during a remodel gets harder to classify, see the S310 foundation, excavation, and demolition contractor guide. For what the policies themselves cover, including pollution and hazardous material questions, see demolition contractor insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew lead's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover the work. DOPL's current S310 Foundation, Excavation, and Demolition Contractor scope includes raising, moving, and removal of a building or structure. Demolition performed as one part of a complete remodel or rebuild can raise another specialty or general classification question. A city business license is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

An insured company can usually get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. If the certificate names a company you do not recognize, ask how it relates to the crew and equipment coming to your property.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits, policy dates, and pollution wording.

DOPL requires contractors to carry general liability, so the certificate should show it. Compare the limits with the ones on DOPL’s current contractor application rather than a number quoted elsewhere, and make sure the policy period covers the demolition dates. On an older building, ask how the policy treats asbestos and lead, which a standard general liability form often limits or excludes.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

A demolition contractor with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person operator may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force on the day the work starts.

Asbestos and the state's demolition steps

Utah's Division of Air Quality lists what state and federal rules require before a demolition starts: an asbestos inspection by a Utah certified asbestos inspector (DAQ exempts some residential buildings of four or fewer units built after January 1, 1992), removal of regulated asbestos-containing material by a Utah certified asbestos contractor where the inspection finds it, an accepted demolition notification form filed at least ten working days before the start date, and a dust control plan for demolition in Salt Lake County. DAQ's guidance puts these steps on the demolition contractor, so ask the company who is handling each one. Asbestos certification is separate from a DOPL contractor license. Read DAQ's requirements prior to demolition for the current rules.

For demolition contractors

What does a Salt Lake City demolition contractor need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City demolition contractor holds a Utah DOPL contractor license, usually S310 Foundation, Excavation, and Demolition Contractor, issued to the business entity. The DOPL application asks for a general liability certificate naming the Division as certificate holder plus a workers compensation certificate or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver for an owner-only business. Most also carry commercial auto for hauling and equipment coverage, and older buildings raise asbestos and lead questions a standard liability form may exclude.

  1. 1

Hold S310 in the business entity’s name.

DOPL’s current S310 scope includes raising, cribbing, underpinning, moving, and removal of a building, structure, or matter appurtenant or incidental to it. The license belongs to the business entity, not the crew lead, so the legal name on the DOPL record, the certificate, and the estimate should match. Demolition performed as one phase of a complete remodel can raise another classification question, so confirm ambiguous scopes with DOPL.

  2. 2

Carry general liability with DOPL as certificate holder.

The contractor application asks for active general liability covering the licensed scope, certified with the Division of Professional Licensing as certificate holder and the licensed business name matching exactly. Two current DOPL sources state different aggregate figures, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path rather than working from a number quoted elsewhere.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A contractor with employees carries workers compensation and files the certificate with DOPL named. An owner-only demolition business may hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission instead; the waiver has a one-year term and becomes invalid once the business hires. Which path applies depends on the worker setup and current agency instructions, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Disclose the structures, the materials, and the survey before quoting.

Demolition is underwritten on the actual operation, and an interior strip-out differs from a structural takedown. Asbestos, lead, and other materials in older buildings fall under pollution-style exclusions on a standard liability form, and Utah DAQ puts the pre-demolition asbestos inspection on the demolition contractor. Damage to neighboring buildings, shared walls, and utilities is the defining exposure, and underwriters ask about the OSHA engineering survey and debris handling.

  5. 5

Expect certificate requests from GCs, municipalities, and permit offices.

Salt Lake City general contractors, developers, municipalities, and permit offices usually ask a demolition contractor for a certificate of insurance before work starts, naming themselves as additional insured, setting minimum limits, and often requiring waiver of subrogation, primary and noncontributory wording, pollution-related wording, or workers comp evidence. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound, but wording the policy does not carry cannot be certified.

For demolition contractors

How does a demolition contractor get listed as verified?

If your demolition company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability, commercial auto for your trucks, or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes all three. Start with the demolition contractor insurance page, the excavation contractor insurance page if your crews also dig and grade, or the S310 contractor license guide if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured demolition contractor in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require demolition contractors to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work, yes. A business that offers or contracts to demolish a building or structure needs a Utah DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers the work, and S310 Foundation, Excavation, and Demolition Contractor is its specialty classification. DOPL’s contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation evidence or a Labor Commission waiver. Jobs below Utah’s handyman exemption threshold may be done without a license, and a license does not guarantee quality or insurance.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City demolition contractor is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew lead’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers the work, such as S310 for demolition. A city business license is a different credential. Where a company on this list displays a license number on its own website, the table shows it, which makes the search faster.

How do I check whether a demolition contractor is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover the demolition, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency named on the certificate.

Does a demolition contractor’s insurance cover damage to my property or a neighbor’s?+

It depends on the policy and what happened. General liability can respond when a demolition contractor’s work damages other property, such as a neighbor’s fence, a shared wall, or a driveway, subject to the policy’s terms. Asbestos, lead, and other hazardous materials disturbed during demolition commonly fall under pollution-style exclusions in a standard general liability form, so on an older building ask how the company’s policy treats them and whether it carries separate pollution coverage.

Does a demolition in Salt Lake City need an asbestos inspection?+

The Utah Division of Air Quality’s Requirements Prior to Demolition page says the demolition contractor must have a structure inspected for asbestos by a Utah certified asbestos inspector before demolition, with an exception for some residential buildings of four or fewer units built after January 1, 1992. It also describes a demolition notification form filed at least ten working days ahead and a dust control plan in Salt Lake County. Asbestos certification is separate from a DOPL contractor license.

Does a demolition contractor license cover interior demolition during a remodel?+

That depends on the contracted result. DOPL’s current S310 scope refers to removal of a building, structure, or related matter; it does not resolve every selective interior-removal fact pattern by name. Separately contracted removal points toward the S310 analysis, while demolition performed as one part of a complete remodel can raise another specialty or general classification question. Ask the demolition company which classification it holds, and confirm ambiguous scopes with DOPL.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the demolition company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates, not whether the license or policies are in force today.

What does a Salt Lake City general contractor ask a demolition subcontractor for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City general contractor, developer, municipality, or permit office hiring a demolition contractor usually asks for a certificate showing general liability at or above the limits in the contract, the hiring party named as additional insured, and evidence of workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver. Demolition exhibits often add waiver of subrogation, primary and noncontributory wording, umbrella limits, and pollution-related wording for asbestos, lead, and dust. Send the exhibit to your agency before the certificate is issued.

What does an underwriter ask a Utah demolition contractor before quoting insurance?+

Demolition insurance is underwritten on the actual operation rather than the word. An underwriter quoting a Utah demolition contractor asks for the mix of interior strip-out, selective, structural, residential, and commercial work, the age and type of structures and how asbestos and lead are handled, whether the OSHA engineering survey happens before work starts, the equipment and hauling vehicles involved, payroll, subcontractors, and prior claims. Describing the real mix produces a more accurate quote than the single word demolition.

How do I get my demolition company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Demolition contractors serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the demolition contractor insurance page.
