Licensed and insured garage door companies in Salt Lake City

As of September 26, 2026, Redoubt has reviewed 16 garage door companies serving Salt Lake City whose own websites state they are licensed and insured. None has yet been checked in DOPL’s license lookup or sent Redoubt a certificate of insurance, so every listing below is marked self-reported. Companies are listed alphabetically, not ranked.

Maintained by Redoubt, a licensed Utah commercial insurance agency at 56 East 300 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, and reviewed by Andre Beukers, its principal. Redoubt does not install or repair garage doors and is not paid by any company on this page. Corrections go to hello@redoubt.agency.

The list

16 Salt Lake City garage door companies that state they are licensed and insured

Alphabetical, not ranked. The list covers residential garage door repair and installation companies and commercial overhead door specialists. Self-reported means the claim comes from the company's own website and Redoubt has not checked the license or reviewed a certificate. Verified means Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL's license lookup and reviewed a current certificate of insurance, each on the date shown. License numbers are shown only where the company displays one on its own site. Franchise and national brand locations are listed as the local unit, and the business named on the certificate, not the brand, holds the policies. Phone numbers and service areas were read from each company's site on September 26, 2026. Several companies publish a different phone number on each page; the one shown is from the page Redoubt read.

By type of work

Which of these companies does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Opener installation and repair

Chain, belt, and wall-mount opener repair and replacement, plus sensors, remotes, keypads, and smart controls. Electrical work beyond an opener that plugs into an existing outlet is a separate licensing question.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search and directory listings, its website was read on September 26, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers the work, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Twenty-four other garage door companies came up in research and were not listed. Seventeen, including several commercial door companies and brand distributors, do not say they are licensed and insured on the pages Redoubt read. One says its technicians are insured but never mentions a license, and one displays a license number but never mentions insurance. Three were left off as likely lead networks or fake-local listings: a city-named brand with an incomplete street address, offices listed by ZIP code alone, or a separate website for each suburb. One is based outside Salt Lake County and does not name the city or county among the places it serves, and one site could not be read because of a security certificate error. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

  • September 26, 2026. First published with 16 companies. All listings are self-reported. 4 of them display a contractor license number on their own websites.
Before you sign

How do you check a garage door company's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read. For an urgent repair such as a broken spring, ask for both when you book the visit.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. Garage doors are named in the S220 carpentry and flooring classification; the S220 contractor license guide explains what it covers and which insurance documents DOPL asks for, and the specialty contractor classifications page shows where S220 sits among the other codes. For what the policies themselves cover, see Utah contractor insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the technician's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover the work. Garage doors are named in the S220 carpentry and flooring classification, and the general building classifications B100 and R100 carry S220 scope. Electrical work beyond an opener that plugs into an existing outlet is a separate licensing question. A city business license is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. At a franchise or national brand location, the named insured should be the local business doing the work, not the brand.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to carry general liability, so the certificate should show it. The policy period should cover the day of the work, and the limits should be listed, not blank. If the company's work causes a door to come down on a car or injure someone, general liability insurance is the policy that usually responds, subject to its terms.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

A garage door company with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For garage door companies

What does a Salt Lake City garage door company need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City garage door company holds a Utah DOPL contractor license, usually S220 Carpentry and Flooring, which names garage doors directly, issued to the business entity rather than the technician. The DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and either workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver, and Salt Lake City builders and property managers ask for a certificate of insurance before the work starts.

  1. 1

Hold S220, which names garage doors.

DOPL issues the contractor license to the business entity, not the technician. Garage doors are named directly in the S220 Carpentry and Flooring scope, and the B100 and R100 general classifications carry S220 scope. Small jobs under Utah’s project-value exemption may be done without a contractor license, so check the current exemption form, and electrical work beyond an opener that plugs into an existing outlet is a separate licensing question.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at the limits DOPL currently asks for.

The DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate with DOPL as certificate holder and the insured name matching the legal business name on the application. Two current DOPL sources disagree on the aggregate, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding coverage.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A garage door company with employees carries workers compensation and shows it on the certificate. A one-person shop with no employees may instead hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission, which is not an insurance policy and becomes invalid once the business hires. The path depends on the actual worker setup, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Expect vehicle and injury claims to land on general liability.

General liability is the policy that usually responds when a door comes down on a parked car after a repair or injures someone, subject to its terms. It generally does not pay to redo the company’s own faulty work or replace parts it installed. Broken-spring repairs and opener installs are the everyday work, and an opener that needs a new outlet or circuit brings in separately licensed electrical work.

  5. 5

Have the certificate ready for builders and property managers.

Salt Lake City builders, general contractors, HOAs, and property managers usually ask a garage door company for a certificate of insurance before the job, often naming themselves as additional insured, setting minimum limits, and asking for workers compensation evidence or the waiver. At a franchise location the named insured should be the local entity doing the work. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.

For garage door companies

How does a garage door company get listed as verified?

If your garage door company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with the Utah contractor insurance page or the general liability insurance guide, or the S220 carpentry contractor license guide if you are applying for or adding the classification.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured garage door company in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require garage door companies to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work, generally yes. Garage doors are named in DOPL’s S220 carpentry and flooring classification, so a business that contracts to install or repair garage doors generally needs a DOPL contractor license, usually S220 or a general classification that carries it. The current DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation evidence or a Labor Commission waiver. Small jobs under Utah’s handyman exemption may be done without a contractor license, so check the current exemption.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City garage door company?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers garage door work, such as S220. Insured usually means the business carries general liability and, if it has employees, workers compensation, often with commercial auto for its trucks. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance; it means the business met DOPL’s requirements when the license was issued and has kept it renewed. The DOPL lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City garage door company is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the technician’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers garage doors, such as S220, B100, or R100. On this list, 4 of the 16 companies display a license number on their own sites, which makes the search faster, but a displayed number is still the company’s own claim.

How do I check whether a garage door company is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your job, and that general liability is listed. At a franchise or national brand location, the named insured should be the local business doing the work. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Is installing a garage door opener electrical work?+

It can be. Garage doors are named in DOPL’s S220 carpentry classification, but electrical connections are regulated separately. Electrical work beyond an opener that plugs into an existing outlet, such as adding an outlet or running a new circuit, is a separate licensing question from the door work. If a quote for an opener includes wiring, ask who will do it, and look that business up in DOPL’s license lookup as well.

Does a garage door company’s insurance cover damage to my car or home?+

It depends on what caused the damage. General liability can respond when a contractor’s work damages other property or injures someone, such as a door that comes down on a parked car after a repair, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to redo the contractor’s own faulty work or replace parts it installed. Ask how the company handles damage and callbacks, and get its warranty in writing before the job.

Do Utah garage door companies have to be bonded?+

Not routinely. A bond is not a standard initial document for a DOPL S220 license, though DOPL may require one based on financial-responsibility issues, so a bond can still be imposed in some cases. The documents the current application asks every contractor for are a general liability certificate and workers compensation evidence or a waiver. When a garage door company’s website says "bonded," ask which bond it holds, in what amount, and what it covers.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

Does a one-person garage door business in Utah need workers compensation?+

A one-person garage door business with no employees may not need a workers compensation policy for its DOPL license. The current DOPL contractor application lets a no-employee applicant submit a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission instead. The waiver is not insurance, has a one-year term, and becomes invalid once the business hires anyone, and a 1099 label does not settle worker status. Builders and property managers may still ask for a workers comp certificate.

What does DOPL ask a Utah garage door contractor for when the license renews?+

At renewal, a Utah garage door contractor keeps current the documents DOPL asked for at application: a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder that covers the licensed scope for as long as the license is active, and workers compensation evidence or a current Labor Commission waiver, which has a one-year term. The current rule also requires six hours of continuing education per two-year term. Exact steps depend on the business, worker setup, and current DOPL instructions.

How do I get my garage door company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Garage door companies serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the Utah contractor insurance page.
