By type of work

Which of these companies does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Glass shops often replace the glass in an existing frame rather than the whole window, so say which you need when you call. Confirm scope, brands, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 26, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers window or glass work, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Thirty-eight other companies and websites that came up in research were not listed. Eleven are referral or lead-generation sites: they say they match homeowners with outside contractors, or they name no business entity, office, or license, and several share one site template. Three state only part of the claim: one displays a Utah license number but never says it is insured, one says a licensed contractor does its installs without mentioning insurance, and one says its installations are fully insured without mentioning a license. Sixteen, including five national brand locations, do not state either on the pages read. Three had sites that blocked automated reading, loaded empty, or no longer list a Utah location. Five do other work, such as custom glass fabrication, window well covers, building supply, bath remodeling, or garage doors. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Before you sign

How do you check a window company's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. The license should show a classification that covers the work. The S230 classification covers glass and glass-holding systems, and general classifications such as B100 and R100, along with R101 non-structural remodeling within its limits, can also cover window replacement. For what the policies themselves cover, see Utah contractor insurance and general liability insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the salesperson's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover the work, such as S230 for glass and glazing systems or a general classification such as B100 or R100. A manufacturer certification or a dealer agreement is not a contractor license. For a new basement egress opening, also ask which license covers cutting the foundation wall.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. For a national brand, that is the entity that operates the local office, not the brand.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to carry general liability, so the certificate should show it. The current DOPL contractor application asks for at least $1 million per incident. The policy period should cover your install dates, and the limit should be listed, not blank.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a workers comp coverage waiver.

Window crews work from ladders, lift heavy insulated glass, and handle broken panes. A company with employees should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop with no employees may instead hold a Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force.

For window and glass companies

What does a Salt Lake City window company need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City window company holds a Utah DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers the work, usually S230 for glass and glass-holding systems, or a general classification such as B100 or R100, issued to the business entity. The DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and either workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver, and Salt Lake City builders and property managers ask for a certificate of insurance before installation.

  1. 1

Hold S230 or a general classification that covers the work.

DOPL issues the contractor license to the business entity, not the salesperson. S230 covers glass and glass-holding systems along with siding, stucco, masonry, and gutters, and the B100 and R100 general classifications carry it. A mirror-only shop is license-exempt under the current rule, and cutting a new egress opening in a foundation wall is structural work that R101 remodeling excludes, so confirm which license covers the cut.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at the limits DOPL currently asks for.

The DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate with DOPL as certificate holder and the insured name matching the legal business name on the application. Two current DOPL sources publish different aggregate limits, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding coverage.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A window company with employees carries workers compensation, and crews that work from ladders, lift heavy insulated glass, and handle broken panes are why builders ask to see it. A one-person shop with no employees may instead hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission, which is not insurance. The path depends on the worker setup, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Expect water intrusion and injury claims to test the policy.

General liability can respond when a window company’s work damages other property, such as water damage to walls and floors after a poorly sealed install, or injures someone, subject to the policy’s terms. It generally does not pay to redo the company’s own faulty work. Describe egress cutting, glazing size and installation method, and water-intrusion exposure when applying, because completed work can produce claims after handover.

  5. 5

Have the certificate ready for builders and property managers.

Salt Lake City builders, general contractors, HOAs, and property managers usually ask a window company for a certificate of insurance before installation, often naming themselves as additional insured, setting minimum limits, and asking for workers compensation evidence or the waiver. For a national brand, the named insured should be the entity that operates the local office. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.

For window and glass companies

How does a window company get listed as verified?

If your window or glass company serves Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with Utah contractor insurance, or see general liability insurance for what the policy covers.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured window company in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require window replacement companies to be licensed and insured?+

For contracting work, generally yes. A business that contracts to replace windows or glass in Utah needs a DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers the work, such as S230, which covers glass and glass-holding systems, or a general classification such as B100 or R100. DOPL also requires general liability. Utah’s current exemption form treats qualifying jobs under $3,000 as exempt, and jobs from $3,000 to under $7,000 as exempt with a one-time filing, so confirm which applies.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City window company?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers window or glass work. Insured usually means it carries general liability and, if it has employees, workers compensation, often with commercial auto for its trucks. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance; it means the business met DOPL’s requirements when the license was issued and has kept it renewed. A manufacturer certification or dealer agreement is a separate credential.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City window company is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the salesperson’s name. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers the job, such as S230 for glass and glazing or a general classification. A shop that only installs mirrors may not need one under the current rule. Two listed companies display a license number on their websites.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City window company is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your install, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Who should cut a new egress window opening in a basement wall?+

Ask before you sign. Cutting a new egress opening in a foundation wall is structural work, not just window installation, so ask the company which license covers the cut and whether its own crew or a subcontractor will make it. A glazing classification covers the window itself, and R101 remodeling excludes footings, foundations, and bearing walls. Ask who pulls any required permit, and make sure the certificate of insurance covers the company doing the cutting.

Does a window company’s insurance cover damage to my home or an injury on my property?+

It depends on the policy and the cause. General liability can respond when a window company’s work damages other property, such as water damage to walls and floors after a poorly sealed install, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to redo the company’s own faulty work. Crew injuries, such as ladder falls or glass cuts, fall under workers compensation, which a company with employees should show on its certificate.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

What does a Salt Lake City builder ask a window company for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City builder or general contractor usually asks a window company for a certificate of insurance before installation. The request commonly names the builder as certificate holder or additional insured, sets minimum general liability limits, and asks for workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver, sometimes with primary and noncontributory wording or a waiver of subrogation. Each item should be checked against the actual policy, because a certificate cannot add coverage the policy does not provide.

What does DOPL ask a Utah window contractor for when the license renews?+

At renewal, a Utah window or glass contractor keeps current the insurance documents DOPL asked for at application: a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder that covers the licensed scope for as long as the license is active, and workers compensation evidence or a current Labor Commission waiver, which has a one-year term and must be replaced once the business hires. Exact renewal steps depend on the business, worker setup, and current DOPL instructions.

How do I get my window company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Window and glass companies serving Salt Lake County whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the Utah contractor insurance page.
