Licensed and insured fence companies in Salt Lake City

As of September 26, 2026, Redoubt has reviewed 13 fence companies serving Salt Lake City whose own websites state they are licensed and insured. None has yet been checked in DOPL’s license lookup or sent Redoubt a certificate of insurance, so every listing below is marked self-reported. Companies are listed alphabetically, not ranked, and every one installs fences; businesses that only sell materials are not listed.

Maintained by Redoubt, a licensed Utah commercial insurance agency at 56 East 300 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, and reviewed by Andre Beukers, its principal. Redoubt does not build fences and is not paid by any company on this page. Corrections go to hello@redoubt.agency.

The list

13 Salt Lake City fence companies that state they are licensed and insured

Sorted by name, with no ranking. A self-reported listing quotes the company's own website; Redoubt has not yet run the license lookup or seen a certificate for it. A verified listing means Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL's license lookup and reviewed a current certificate of insurance, and it shows the date of each check. A license number appears only when the company prints one on its own site. Fence types, service areas, and phone numbers were read from each company's site on September 26, 2026.

By type of fence

Which of these companies installs the fence you want?

Grouped from the fence types and services each company lists on its own site, so most companies appear in more than one group. Materials, lead times, and pricing change, so confirm them with the company before you sign.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, and reading contractor certificates of insurance is part of its daily work, including the general liability certificate DOPL asks for with an S330 license application. That is why this list exists. Each company was found through public search and directory listings, its website was read on September 26, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was saved with a link, along with any license number the site displays. Businesses that only sell fence materials, and sites that pass requests along to other installers, were not considered. No company paid to be listed, and none was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The fence company’s own website says it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not run the business through DOPL’s license lookup or seen its certificate of insurance.
  • The listing keeps the quoted claim, the page it came from, the date it was read, and any license number the site shows.
  • Use it as a lead, then run the lookup and request the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, under the listed name, in a classification that covers fence work such as S330.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed business, and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label shows both dates and describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Twenty-three other companies that Redoubt checked were not listed. Eleven have websites that do not state they are licensed and insured. Three state only part of the claim: the word licensed or a license number, with no insurance wording. Three had websites that could not be reached or now redirect to an unrelated site, one appeared only in directory listings with no website of its own that Redoubt could find, and one makes the claim only on a third-party listing. Two are material suppliers that do not install, one is based in Cache County and does not name Salt Lake City or County, and one is a concrete contractor whose fencing page was still unfinished. Any of them can be added once its own site states both parts of the claim or it sends a certificate.

Before you sign

How do you check a fence company's license and insurance in Utah?

A website that says “licensed and insured” is making a claim. The DOPL license lookup and a current certificate of insurance are how you confirm it. Both checks take a few minutes, which is short next to the years a fence is supposed to stand.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. Fencing is licensed under S330, and the retired S420 and S421 fencing codes were folded into it in 2019; the S330 landscape and recreation contractor guide covers the scope and the insurance documents DOPL asks for. Because fence contractors share that classification with landscape contractors, the landscape contractor insurance page explains the policies that usually sit behind the certificate.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

Search the legal business name from your estimate in the DOPL licensee search, not a salesperson's name or the brand on the truck. The status should be Active, and the classification should cover fence work, which in Utah usually means S330 Landscape and Recreation Contractor. A B100 or R100 general building license also includes that scope. A city business license is not a contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

An insured fence company can have its agency email a certificate the same day. The named insured should be the same business that holds the DOPL license and signs your contract. If a national brand name is on the yard sign, ask which local business holds the license and the policy.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to carry general liability, so the certificate should show it. The current DOPL contractor application states $1,000,000 each incident and $3,000,000 total; the S330 guide notes that DOPL's own webpage has shown different figures, so work from the current form. The policy period should cover your install dates, and each limit should be filled in rather than left blank.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a workers comp waiver.

A fence company that sends a crew should show workers compensation on the certificate. An owner with no employees may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each one means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A certificate shows the policy on the day it was issued. Coverage can be cancelled afterward, so the agency named on the certificate is the one that can confirm the policy is still active on the day the post-hole auger arrives.

For fence companies

What does a Salt Lake City fence company need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City fence company holds a Utah DOPL contractor license issued to the business entity, usually S330 Landscape and Recreation Contractor, whose scope names fences, guardrails, handrails, and barriers since the retired S420 and S421 fencing codes were folded into it in 2019. DOPL’s contractor application asks for a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder, plus workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver for a business with no employees.

  1. 1

Hold S330 in the business’s name.

Fencing sits inside S330, the Landscape and Recreation Contractor classification, which names flag poles, fences, guardrails, handrails, and barriers, and a B100 or R100 general building license already includes the scope. DOPL issues the license to the business entity, not a salesperson or the brand on the truck. Utah’s small-job exemption is written around work on a building, so do not assume a small fence job is exempt.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at DOPL’s current limits.

The contractor application asks for a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder, with the named insured matching the licensed business exactly. Two current DOPL sources disagree on the limit, $1 million per occurrence with either $2 million or $3 million aggregate, so confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding. A local location of a national brand needs the certificate in the local entity’s name.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A fence company that sends a crew carries workers compensation. An owner who installs alone with no employees may instead hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission; it runs one year and becomes invalid once the business hires. Which path applies depends on the worker setup, and DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Locate utilities before the auger goes in.

Follow Utah 811 Blue Stakes locate practice before the post-hole auger goes in. General liability can respond when the auger cuts a sprinkler line or a buried utility, or a panel lands in a neighbor’s yard, subject to the policy, but not to resetting your own leaning posts. A fence that fails later is a completed-operations question, and automatic gates are a separate service to disclose before the work begins.

  5. 5

Expect certificate requests from GCs, HOAs, and property managers.

Salt Lake City general contractors, HOAs, and property managers hiring a fence company for a subdivision or commercial perimeter usually want a certificate of insurance before the crew arrives, naming them as additional insured, setting minimum limits, and showing workers compensation or the waiver. Additional insured status comes from an endorsement, not a line on the certificate. An agency can email the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.

For fence companies

How does a fence company get listed as verified?

If your company installs fences in Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance that shows general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, along with the legal name on your DOPL contractor license. When the license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and the documents check out, the listing is marked verified with both dates. Listing is free.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Fence contractors are licensed under S330, so the landscape contractor insurance page is the closest fit, the Utah contractor insurance page covers workers comp, commercial auto, and certificate requests for any trade, and the S330 license guide helps if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured fence company in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require fence companies to be licensed and insured?+

For most fence installation, yes. Utah licenses contractors through DOPL, and fences, guardrails, handrails, and barriers sit in the S330 Landscape and Recreation Contractor classification. The current DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and either workers compensation or, for a business with no employees, a Labor Commission waiver. Utah’s handyman exemption covers some small contracts, but it is written around work on a building, so do not assume a small fence job is exempt. Confirm with DOPL.

Which DOPL license covers fence installation in Utah?+

S330, the Landscape and Recreation Contractor classification. Its scope names flag poles, fences, guardrails, handrails, and barriers, plus perimeter fencing around sports courts and fields. Utah once had separate fencing codes, S420 General Fencing Contractor and S421 Residential Fencing Contractor, but they were folded into S330 in 2019. Decks and fences point to S330 rather than S220 carpentry, and a B100 or R100 general building license already includes the S330 scope. Redoubt’s S330 guide covers the details.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City fence company is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on your estimate, not a salesperson’s name or the brand painted on the truck. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers fence work, usually S330. A city business license is a different credential. If the company’s website shows a contractor license number, confirm that the DOPL record for that number names the same business.

How do I check whether a fence company is really insured?+

Ask the fence company to have its insurance agency send you a certificate of insurance, or COI, rather than a photo of an old one. Read the named insured, the policy dates, and the general liability limits, and confirm the name matches the licensed business on your estimate. Ask whether the crew is covered by workers compensation or the owner holds a Labor Commission waiver. Then call the agency on the certificate to confirm the policy is still active.

Does a fence company’s insurance cover a cut sprinkler line or damage to a neighbor’s yard?+

It depends on what was damaged and why. General liability can respond when a fence crew’s work damages someone else’s property, such as an auger that cuts a sprinkler line or a panel that falls into a neighbor’s yard, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to reset leaning posts or rebuild the company’s own faulty work. Completed-operations coverage matters for problems that show up after the crew leaves. Get the workmanship warranty in writing.

Do Utah fence contractors have to be bonded?+

Not as a general condition of the DOPL contractor license. The current DOPL application checklist asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation or a waiver, and it lists no bond. DOPL can require a bond later if it makes a financial-responsibility finding, and a property owner or general contractor can still require one in a contract. When a fence company’s website says bonded, ask which bond it holds and what that bond covers.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the fence company’s own website states it is licensed and insured, and Redoubt has not yet looked the business up in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A license number shown on a company’s site is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the certificate showed on those dates, not today.

Does a one-person fence business in Utah need workers compensation?+

A fence installer who works alone with no employees does not necessarily need a workers compensation policy. The current DOPL contractor application accepts either a workers compensation certificate or a Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission, which decides eligibility. The waiver is not insurance, runs one year, and becomes invalid once the business hires anyone; DOPL requires written notice before that person works. A helper paid on a 1099 does not settle the question.

What does a Salt Lake City general contractor or HOA ask a fence company for on a certificate of insurance?+

A Salt Lake City general contractor, HOA, or property manager hiring a fence company usually asks for a certificate of insurance showing general liability at the limits in the contract, workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver, and the hiring party named as additional insured. Additional insured status comes from an endorsement on the fence company’s policy, not a line typed on the certificate, and completed operations is usually a separate endorsement. Send the agency the full insurance exhibit.

How do I get my fence company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Fence companies serving Salt Lake County that install fences, whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup, and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. Material suppliers and referral services are not listed. There is no fee, and Redoubt also quotes general liability for fence contractors.
