By type of work

Which of these contractors does the kind of work you need?

Grouped from the services each company lists on its own site. Most companies appear in more than one group. Confirm scope, availability, and pricing with the company directly.

Methodology

How does Redoubt check these listings?

Redoubt is an insurance agency, so it reads contractor certificates of insurance every day, including the general liability certificates Utah landscape contractors prepare for DOPL. That is the only reason this list exists. Each company was found through public search, its website was read on September 25, 2026, and the exact wording of its licensed-and-insured claim was recorded with a link, along with any license number the site displays. Companies whose sites describe only mowing and maintenance were not considered. No company paid to be listed, and no company was ranked.

Self-reported

  • The company’s own website states it is licensed and insured.
  • Redoubt has not checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup and has not seen a certificate of insurance.
  • The listing records the claim, its source, the date it was read, and any license number the site displays.
  • Treat it as a starting point. Run the lookup and ask for the certificate yourself.

Verified

  • Redoubt found the business Active in DOPL’s license lookup, in a classification that covers landscape work, under the listed name.
  • The company sent Redoubt a current certificate of insurance.
  • The named insured matched the licensed entity and general liability was in force on the review date.
  • The label carries both dates. It describes those dates, not today.

Left off: Twenty-six additional companies that Redoubt checked were not listed. Thirteen have websites that do not state they are licensed and insured. Six state only part of the claim: a license number or the word licensed with no insurance wording, or licensed and bonded without insured. Three had websites that could not be reached, three appeared only in directory listings with no website of their own that Redoubt could find, and one is based in Tooele County and names only the southwest edge of the Salt Lake Valley. Companies that later state both parts of the claim, or that send a certificate, can be added.

Changelog

  • September 25, 2026. First published with 19 companies. All listings are self-reported. 2 of them display a contractor license number on their own websites.
Before you sign

How do you check a landscape contractor's license and insurance in Utah?

“Licensed and insured” on a website is a claim. The DOPL license lookup and the certificate of insurance are the evidence. The lookup takes a minute; the certificate takes one email to request and about two minutes to read.

For how Utah contractor licensing works, start with the DOPL contractor licensing overview. For what the S330 landscape classification covers, from retaining walls to the irrigation clause, and which insurance documents DOPL asks for, see the S330 landscape and recreation contractor guide. For what the policies themselves cover, including completed operations and underground work, see landscape contractor insurance.

  1. 1

Look the company up in DOPL’s license lookup.

The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew's name, in the DOPL licensee search. Status should be Active and the classification should cover the work, usually S330 for landscaping, retaining walls, and irrigation, or B100 for a general contractor. A city business license is not the contractor license.

  2. 2

Ask for a certificate of insurance and match the named insured to the licensed entity.

Any insured company can get a COI from its insurance agency the same day. The legal name on it should match the DOPL record and the estimate. If the crew works under a brand name that differs from the licensed entity, ask how the two relate before you sign.

  3. 3

Check the general liability limits and policy dates.

DOPL requires contractors to carry general liability, so the certificate should show it. The current DOPL contractor application states $1,000,000 each incident and $3,000,000 total; the S330 guide explains why some DOPL pages still show older figures. The policy period should cover the days the crew is on site, and the limit should be listed, not blank.

  4. 4

Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a DOPL workers comp waiver.

A landscape contractor with a crew should show workers compensation on the certificate. A one-person shop may instead hold a Utah Labor Commission waiver. See workers comp for contractors and the workers comp waiver for what each means.

  5. 5

Call the agency on the certificate to confirm coverage is in force.

A COI is a snapshot. Policies can be cancelled after the certificate is issued, so the agency named on it is the only party that can confirm coverage is still in force on the day the excavator shows up.

For landscape contractors

What does a Salt Lake City landscape contractor need to carry to be licensed and insured?

A Salt Lake City landscape contractor holds a Utah DOPL contractor license issued to the business entity, usually S330 Landscape and Recreation Contractor, which names grading and planting, irrigation, retaining walls, patios, and fencing. DOPL’s contractor application asks for a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder, plus workers compensation evidence or a Utah Labor Commission coverage waiver for a business with no employees. Skid steers, trenchers, and trucks need their own coverage.

  1. 1

Hold S330 in the business’s name.

S330 covers grading and planting plus irrigation, retaining walls, patios, fencing, and incidental concrete or excavation; a B100 general license includes that scope. DOPL issues the license to the business entity, not the crew or a brand. Utah’s small-job exemption is written around work on a building, so a standalone yard job may not fit it, while lawn aeration, fertilizing, power raking, and dethatching need no license at any value.

  2. 2

Carry general liability at DOPL’s current limits.

The contractor application asks for a general liability certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder and covering the licensed scope for the entire duration of licensure. Two current DOPL sources disagree on the limit: $1 million per occurrence, with the aggregate shown as $2 million on one and $3 million on the other. Confirm the figure with DOPL for your application path before binding.

  3. 3

Show workers compensation or a Labor Commission waiver.

A landscape contractor with installation crews carries workers compensation. An owner-only business may instead hold a Utah Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission, which runs one year and becomes invalid once the business hires; the DOPL application requires written notice before an employee starts work. Helpers and 1099 labor do not settle the question on their own. DOPL asks for the evidence at application and renewal.

  4. 4

Describe irrigation, excavation, and retaining walls when you apply.

Grading and excavation bring utility strikes, trench safety, and adjacent property into the picture, so follow Utah 811 Blue Stakes locate practice and disclose the depth you dig. Retaining walls, patios, and irrigation can fail after the crew leaves, which is a completed-operations question. A skid steer, loader, or trencher moving between jobs needs an equipment schedule, and trucks and trailers need commercial auto; general liability covers none of them.

  5. 5

Expect insurance exhibits from GCs, HOAs, and property managers.

General contractors, developers, HOAs, and property managers awarding Salt Lake City landscape work usually send an insurance exhibit that sets minimum limits, names them as additional insured, and asks for workers compensation or the waiver. Send the whole exhibit, not a cropped certificate request, because additional insured status comes from an endorsement. An agency can issue the certificate the same day once coverage is bound.

For landscape contractors

How does a landscape contractor get listed as verified?

If your company installs or builds landscapes in Salt Lake County, send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability and, if you have employees, workers compensation, plus the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Companies whose license shows Active in DOPL's lookup and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. There is no fee.

Need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first? Redoubt quotes both. Start with the landscape contractor insurance page, the irrigation contractor insurance page if sprinklers are most of your work, or the S330 landscape contractor license guide if you are applying for or renewing the license.

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a licensed and insured landscape contractor in Salt Lake City

Does Utah require landscape contractors to be licensed and insured?+

For most installation and construction work, yes. A business that contracts to build landscapes, retaining walls, patios, or sprinkler systems in Utah generally needs a DOPL contractor license, most often the S330 Landscape and Recreation classification, and the current DOPL contractor application asks for a general liability certificate and workers compensation evidence or a waiver. Small contracts fall under Utah’s handyman exemption thresholds, and the current exemption list names lawn aeration, fertilizing, power raking, and dethatching as work that needs no license at any value. Confirm which applies to your job.

What does "licensed and insured" mean for a Salt Lake City landscape contractor?+

Licensed usually means the business holds a Utah DOPL contractor license in a classification that covers the work, most often S330 for landscaping, retaining walls, patios, and irrigation. Insured usually means the business carries general liability and, if it has employees, workers compensation, often with commercial auto and equipment coverage. A license does not guarantee quality or insurance; it means the business met DOPL’s requirements when it was issued and has kept it renewed. The lookup and the certificate are the evidence.

Which DOPL license covers landscaping, retaining walls, and sprinkler installation?+

S330, the Landscape and Recreation Contractor classification, names retaining walls, patios, pergolas, decking, and incidental concrete or excavation, and its irrigation clause is the only plumbing an S330 licensee may self-perform, subject to backflow conditions. Standalone concrete flatwork and paving are S260 work, and built-in-place pools moved to general contractor classifications in 2026. Some landscape companies hold a B100 general contractor license instead. Redoubt’s S330 guide covers the scope in detail.

How do I check whether a Salt Lake City landscape contractor is really licensed?+

Search the business name in Utah DOPL’s licensee search. The license belongs to the business entity, so search the legal name on the estimate, not the crew’s name or a brand nickname. The result should show an Active contractor license in a classification that covers the work, such as S330 or B100. A city business license or a pesticide applicator license is a different credential. Some companies on this list display a contractor license number on their own websites, which makes the search faster.

How do I check whether a landscape contractor is really insured?+

Ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, issued by the company’s insurance agency. It shows the insured’s legal name, the carrier, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and limits. Check that the named insured matches the licensed business, that the dates cover your project, and that general liability is listed. Ask whether the company carries workers compensation or holds a Labor Commission waiver. For certainty, call the agency on the certificate.

Does a landscape contractor’s insurance cover a retaining wall that fails or a sprinkler line that floods my basement?+

It depends on what failed and why. General liability can respond when a contractor’s work damages other property, such as a broken irrigation line that floods a basement, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. It generally does not pay to rebuild the contractor’s own defective work, and completed-operations coverage matters for problems that show up after the crew leaves. Ask how the company handles warranty work and get its answer in writing before the job.

What does "self-reported" mean on this list?+

Self-reported means the company’s own website states it is licensed and insured and Redoubt has not yet checked the business in DOPL’s license lookup or reviewed its certificate of insurance. Verified means Redoubt did both and recorded each date. A displayed license number is something the company published, not a Redoubt check. A verified label describes what the lookup and the documents showed on those dates and does not guarantee the license or policies are still in force today.

Does a one-person landscape business in Utah need workers compensation?+

A one-person landscape business with no employees does not necessarily need a workers compensation policy. The current DOPL contractor application accepts either a workers compensation certificate or a Workers Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission, which decides eligibility. The waiver is not insurance, has a one-year term, and becomes invalid once the business hires, and DOPL requires written notice before a new employee works. Helpers and 1099 labor do not settle the question.

What does DOPL ask a Utah landscape contractor for when the S330 license renews?+

An S330 license renews on a two-year term. The current rule requires six hours of continuing education per term, and a landscape contractor who installs backflow prevention devices under the irrigation clause must make at least two of those hours backflow-installation CE. General liability must cover the licensed scope for the entire duration of licensure and a Labor Commission waiver runs only one year, so keep both current and confirm the details with DOPL.

How do I get my landscaping company added to this list?+

Send Redoubt a current certificate of insurance showing general liability, plus workers compensation if you have employees, and the legal name your DOPL contractor license is issued under. Landscape contractors serving Salt Lake County that install or build, whose license shows Active in DOPL’s lookup, and whose documents check out are listed as verified with both dates. Mowing-only services are not listed. There is no fee. If you need general liability or a DOPL-ready certificate first, Redoubt quotes both; start on the landscape contractor insurance page.
